Thank you for your reply.
I've just started the modeling of an offshore monopile wind turbine structure with OpenFAST. The model data I have is the lumped mass and inertia properties of RNA and geometrical and structural properties of a tower and pile.

I tried to model the whole structure with SubDyn; but, in the SubDyn, I could not find a feature to model such lumped properties at a specific joint(rigid link) in the manual. Then, as an alternative, I started looking at the ElastoDyn but, this time, I realized that I do not have enough information for the analysis due to the lumped RNA. For my own testing, I ignored all the degrees of freedom except for the yaw DOF expecting that I do not need the tower and blades files but I ended up with initialization error.

Could you please guide me to model these lumped properties?

Dear Bitna,

If you model the entire support structure (tower + pile) in SubDyn, I see two fairly direct ways at specifying the lumped mass/inertia of the RNA:
  • In this case the ElastoDyn platform will be located at the tower-top, so, the lumped platform mass/inertia can be used to model the lumped mass/inertia of the RNA (the remaining mass/inertias of the tower, nacelle, hub, and blades in ElastoDyn should be zeroed, and the drivetrain and blade DOFs should be disabled).
  • SubDyn supports joint additional concentrated masses (by setting NCmass > 0), which you could use to model the lumped mass/inertia of RNA in SubDyn (in this case, you'd still have to specify some mass/inertia in the ElastoDyn platform because the tower-top DOFs will be modeled via the platform DOFs in ElastoDyn).
If you choose to model only the pile in SubDyn and the tower in ElastoDyn, there is no easy way to specify the lumped mass/inertia of the RNA in ElastoDyn. Instead, you'd have to disable the drivetrain and blade DOFs to make the RNA rigid and define appropriate masses/inertias of the nacelle, hub, and blades that result in the correct overall lumped mass/inertia of the RNA.
