Dear Dr. Jason Jonkman
I am trying to analyze the ITI 5MW Barge using FAST V8. I have few questions regarding the geometry of the platform and tower used. I would highyl appreciate your help.
1. In some reports the dimensions of the Moon-Pool are given as 10 * 10 * 10 m while in one report given as 10*10*3.99 m. I believe the later ones are correct dimensions?
2. In Table 3-8 of your PhD dissertation the tower mass is given as 347,460 m, and tower height above ground is given as 87.60 m and its center of mass given as 38.234 m with respect to ground or MSL. In the ElastoDyn input file for ITI-Barge the distance from the MSL to the tower base is, TowerBsHt = 0. This made me confuse about the tower height and its center of mass. As the free-board of the platform is 6 m then the TowerBsHt from MSL should be 6 m. Thus the total height of the tower becomes 87.60 - 6 m. I would highly appreciate your help regarding the correct values of the tower height, tower base, and its center of mass from MSL.
Also i will be thankful if you can send me a copy of Vijfuizen's MS thesis, i will email you.
Thank you
ITI 5MW Barge

Re: ITI 5MW Barge
Dear Zahid,
Here are my answers to your questions regarding the ITI Energy barge:
1. The actual dimensions of the moon pool are 10 x 10 x 10 m. The WAMIT model only needs to consider the wetted portion of the surface of the barge with moon pool in the undisplaced position i.e. the draft of 4 m. Because we did not attempt to model the energy extraction device in the moon pool, we simply covered the top of the moon pool in the WAMIT model with a flat plat located 0.01-m below the MSL, resulting in the WAMIT model having a moon pool of dimensions 10 x 10 x 3.99 m. See my PhD thesis-turned NREL report for more information: http://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy10osti/45891.pdf.
2. The moon pool is located in the center of the barge and the details of how the tower--also located in the center of the barge--was connected to the barge were never flushed out in the design. So, we simply modeled the tower base at the MSL.
Best regards,

Dear Dr. Jason Jonkman
I am trying to analyze the ITI 5MW Barge by using openfast. I would like to know about the design condition of the platform.
I will be thankful if you can send me a copy of Vijfuizen's MS thesis.
Thank you
