Re: TurbSim on a 64-bit computer

Because people still refer to this post, I will note that Marshall's results were obtained prior to TurbSim v1.50. Memory requirements in v1.50 were significantly reduced: TurbSim can now generate grids of 75 x 75 points (630 seconds at 20 Hz) using about 1.8 GB of RAM, which will run on a 32-bit co...

TurbSim CPU Times

I occasionally get questions regarding the approximate time that it takes to create large grids in TurbSim, so I thought I would post some plots to illustrate the relationship between the number of grid points (on an n by n grid) and computation time. The computation time is dominated by the Cholesk...

Re: TurbSim: incorrect flow angle at zero turbulence

Hi, Stefan. The problem you describe is really an artifact of the scaling method used to store/retrieve data in the BLADED-style binary output files (".wnd" files). The scaling method doesn't work very well (or at all!) when you have files with very low standard deviations or very high she...

FAST v7.00.01a-bjj Available

Dear Design Codes Users, We have released an updated version of FAST on our website. FAST v7.00.01a-bjj fixes a bug in v7.00.00a-bjj that occurred when requesting aerodynamic forces from AeroDyn when input parameter PtfmRef was non-zero. It also fixes a few instances where we used some non-standard ...

Re: Compiling FAST with IVF

Subin, If you have compiled the original FAST 7.00.00a-bjj source code without any changes and don't get the same results as the executable we've supplied, I would agree that there is something strange going on. Often, the errors you mention are a result of omitting the /Qsave or /Qzero flags. I'd a...

Re: Tower shadow model in Aerodyn

Hi, Matthias. The tower influence model documented in the AeroDyn theory manual is available in AeroDyn v13.00.00a-bjj. You can read about the required inputs on pages 1 and 2 in http://wind.nrel.gov/designcodes/simulators/aerodyn/March312010UpdatesAndNewAeroDynInterface.pdf . There is also a sample...

Re: Compiling FAST with IVF

Subin, If you want to modify the script to use the Intel 64-bit compiler, you will need to change the location of the compiler (i.e. SET IVF_LOC=C:\PROGRA~1\Intel\Compiler\11.1\065\bin\intel64 or the equivalent path on your machine). Then, you will need to change the argument to the ifortvars.bat fi...

Re: FAST Sfunction does not close files

Hi, Felix. Glad to see you've been figuring out how to get files to close using the FAST S-Function. I thought I would post a little information regarding the structure of this function so that you and others reading this will have a better idea of what is happening. The S-Function is just a FORTRAN...

Re: FAST: Error in AeroDyn/AD_WindVelocityWithDisturbance()

Hi, Felix. I've never seen this error so I don't know what the problem is. My first thought was that IVF 9.1 was causing a problem, but it looks like there is also a problem when you compile with IVF 11.0. You could look at the time-series output and/or the position input of the AD_WindVelocityWithD...

Re: Compile A2AD with Bladed-DLL Interface

Hi, Felix. Not only do you have to change the 3 files you mentioned, but they have to be compiled in a slightly different order. I created a version that takes care of the necessary changes, and you can download it here: http://wind.nrel.gov/public/bjonkman/DesignCodes/CompileLinkA2AD_130001a-bjj.ba...

Re: Using ADAMS with AeroDyn and 64-bit computer/OS

Glad it worked. I've noticed that it's a little difficult to search the forums these days. Many search terms are "too common" and therefore excluded from the search. I'll have to see if there's something we can do about that.

Re: Using ADAMS with AeroDyn and 64-bit computer/OS

Hi, Sandeep. Another user (Juan.GarciaMartinez) was able to compile 64 bit versions of Adams 2008r1 with IVF 11.0 by changing an optimization setting, using the /O1 compile switch. You might check out this thread to see what he did: https://wind.nrel.gov/forum/wind/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=318 . Let ...

Re: AeroDyn .elm Element File / For which blade is the data

Hi, Andreas. Opening the .elm element file, produced by Aerodyn, we were wondering for which blade the data shown is? AeroDyn currently outputs information for only Blade 1. We hope to add the option to output information for all blades in a future version, but--for now--you have to modify the code ...

However, I always suggest that people try to get some idea of what they are trying to generate before pushing the button to ...

Re: Results comparison ADAMS and FAST

Hi, Juan. It sounds like you've found a way to get IVF 11 working with several versions of ADAMS. The ADAMS documentation lists the recommended compiler options, including the level of optimization. It doesn't include /O1 for 2008r1, but I really couldn't tell you if that would be an issue anywhere-...
