July 14–15, 2000 A workshop on furling small wind turbines was held at the NWTC on July 14 and 15, 2000 (just prior to the NWTC Subcontractor Review). The intent of this workshop was to share both analytical and empirical knowledge on the furling and yawing interaction of small turbines. Our expectation is that this workshop will result in the education of furling experts on what has been done to date plus the identification of shortcomings in furling analysis and test activities. The first day of the workshop involved presentations by furling experts on analytical and empirical approaches to furling and yawing. On the second day we had a brainstorming session to help identify the shortcomings as well as prioritize them for further explorations. We do not wish to identify an extensive multi-year research program but rather move the research forward toward reasonable engineering approximations that will aid in the design of small furling turbines. If you have any questions about the workshop, please contact Trudy Forsyth at (303) 384-6932 or Marshall Buhl at (303) 384-6914.
